American Idol: Season 15, Finale, 4/7/16

Goodbye, American Idol “for now,” as Ryan Seacrest’s last sign-off ended (ad-libbed?). For the first time in fifteen years, there’s no next season, no next American Idol. There are likely to be reunions and retrospectives and maybe even a revival down the line, but it won’t be the same. This model’s off line.

That said, Trent Harmon is the last American idol, a white Southern soul man who didn’t play guitar even once during the whole season. If the lines were jammed for his rival La Porsha Renae, which they were Wednesday night, what must they have been for him?

Plenty of arguments may be made about what guests were and weren’t on the finale, but here were some moments, good and not:

1.  The rockers:  Caleb Johnson, Constantine Maroulis, Bo Bice, James Durban, Chris Daughtry blues-shouting their way through “Tobacco Road.” Alison Iraheta would’ve belonged here, too, but she was in a separate segment.

2. The country singers:  Scotty McCreery, Bucky Covington, Kree Harrison, Lauren Alina, Kellie Pickler, along with some former contestants who aren’t normally associated with country. Maroulis was doing double duty by appearing in this segment, and I’m guessing he was a hasty replacement for Josh Gracin, who reportedly turned down the invitation.

3. An overlong Jennifer Lopez number that looked more suited to a Vegas strip club.

So fans of singing contests will have to make do with The Voice from now on.
